Derby Firecracker
The Derby Firecracker is an annual running event held on July 4th in Derby, Kansas. The event takes place at High Park and features two certified distances. Participants can choose to compete in a single race or take part in both events.
The available distances include:
- 4 Miles
- 1 Mile
The 4 Mile course is a looped route that starts at the north end of High Park. It travels through the Derby High School campus and follows the sidewalks along Madison Avenue, Rock Road, and James Street before returning to the park. An aid station providing water is located at the 2.5 mile mark. This race is open to both runners and walkers of all abilities.
The 1 Mile race is a fast, certified course contained entirely within High Park. The route consists of a loop around the park's ponds. This distance also welcomes participants of all ages and fitness levels.
Both races utilize chip-timing for accurate results. Participants receive finisher medals, and the first 400 registrants are provided with tri-blend shirts. Cash rewards are available for the fastest male and female finishers in each race. Custom awards are also presented to the top three runners in numerous age categories, ranging from under 10 to over 80 years old. Post-race refreshments, including bottled water and pre-packaged snacks, are provided at the finish line.
The event follows specific safety guidelines. No roller blades, bicycles, skateboards, or dogs are permitted on the course, with an exception for service animals. Strollers and slower participants are asked to start at the rear of the pack. Parking is available in the north parking lot of High Park.
