DENFIT 1776
DENFIT 1776 is an annual running event held on July 4th in Cape Vincent, New York. The course begins at the Cape Vincent East End Waterfront Park and follows a scenic, flat route through the village and along the river to the Tibbetts Point Lighthouse. These events allow participants to run or walk while viewing the local river scenery.
Participants choose from two distinct distances:
- 7.76 Miles: A single lap from the park to the lighthouse and back.
- 17.76 Miles Challenge: Two laps of the 7.76-mile course.
The event features specific requirements regarding American flags. Participants in the 7.76 Miles event must display an American flag of any size or wear red, white, and blue clothing. Those participating in the 17.76 Miles Challenge are required to provide and carry a 3x5-foot American flag on a pole for the entire duration of the run. Completion of the longer challenge distance earns the participant a custom four-foot spear.
The event is largely self-supported, with one aid station positioned at the lighthouse turnaround point. Every runner receives a t-shirt and a medal, with light refreshments provided after finishing. Registration before June 16, 2026, is required to guarantee specific t-shirt sizing. Following the races, the area hosts a local bicycle parade for children.
