Endurance Elimination Race at Sam Houston Park

Death By A Mile is an endurance running event held at Sam Houston Park in Lake Charles. The race follows a last-person-standing format where participants must complete a 1-mile loop within a decreasing time window. The event continues until only one male and one female runner remain.

The competition is structured into various time intervals:

  • 1 mile every 30 minutes
  • 1 mile every 20 minutes
  • 1 mile every 15 minutes
  • 1 mile every 12 minutes
  • 1 mile every 10 minutes
  • 1 mile every 8 minutes
  • 1 mile every 6 minutes (final stage)

The course starts and ends at the large pavilion near the boardwalk. It is a marked loop identified by flags. As the event progresses into the night, participants are advised to bring a headlamp or flashlight. The park remains open to the public during the event, and runners must complete their full mile before receiving a bib punch.

Registration is limited to the first 100 participants. While some food and drinks are provided, runners are encouraged to bring their own nutrition, hydration, and supplies such as chairs, blankets, and warm clothing. All participants receive an event shirt if registered by the specified deadline, but only the final two winners receive awards. Pets are not permitted on the course.
