Event overview
The Dartmoor Volcano Race is a 10th anniversary trail race held on the edge of Dartmoor in Scoriton (TQ11 0JB). The course is 10.5 miles long, 100% trail over rough moorland tracks and trails, and includes over 550 metres of ascent. The event is fully marked and marshaled and has a race limit of 250 entrants. Minimum age on race day is 17 years.
Course, facilities and kit
The route visits high points including Ryder's Hill and the Red Lake Volcano, and traverses rocky, boggy and sometimes technical terrain. The race includes: 3 river crossings, 1 Clapper Bridge crossing, 2 bogs, a volcano ascent, a long uphill start and a long downhill finish. An aid station is located at about 6.3 miles offering drinks and a small selection of snacks. Finishers receive bespoke medals; bespoke t-shirts are available to purchase and bespoke trophies are awarded to the first three male and female finishers.
Because the route is remote and conditions on Dartmoor are changeable, a mandatory kit list is required. Required items include trail running shoes, a backpack or waistpack, whistle, foil/survival blanket, waterproof jacket, headcover, a mobile phone with emergency number stored and capacity to carry at least 250 ml of liquid. Parking is provided in a field roughly 300 m from the village hall. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
