Event overview

The Dartmoor Volcano Race is a 10th anniversary trail event taking place on Saturday 12 September 2026. The course is 10.5 miles, entirely on trail, with over 550 metres of ascent. The high-level route visits southern Dartmoor high points including Ryders Hill and the Red Lake Volcano, and traverses rocky, boggy and sometimes technical terrain. The course is fully marked and marshaled, with a race limit of 250 and a minimum age of 17 on race day. The race starts and finishes in the village of Scoriton (TQ11 0JB), about 4 miles from the A38 at the Buckfastleigh/Ashburton junction. All finishers receive a bespoke race medal; bespoke t-shirts are available to purchase.

Logistics and safety

The event is run under UKA rules, licensed by the Trail Running Association, and holds permission from Dartmoor National Park Authority and landowners. On-course features include three river crossings, one Clapper Bridge crossing, two bogs, a volcano ascent, a long uphill start and a long downhill finish. Qualified paramedics will attend and there is an aid station around 6.3 miles offering drinks and a small selection of snacks. A mandatory kit list is in force; required items include trail running shoes, a backpack or waistpack, whistle, foil/survival blanket, waterproof jacket, headcover, a mobile phone and capacity to carry at least 250 ml of liquid (participants must provide their own cup or bottle). Participants must report to a marshal if withdrawing. Results are published online after the race. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
