Event overview
The Dartmoor Volcano Race is a 10.5-mile trail race on the edge of Dartmoor, based at Scorriton (TQ11 0JB). The course visits high ground including Ryders Hill and the Red Lake Volcano and features over 550 metres of ascent. Entry is limited to 250 competitors and the minimum age on race day is 17. Finishers receive a bespoke medal and bespoke trophies are awarded to the first three male and first three female finishers. Event t-shirts are available to purchase through the entry system.
Route, logistics and safety
The course is fully marked and marshaled and runs over rough moorland tracks and trails. Key route features include:
- 10.5 miles
- over 550 m ascent
- 3 river crossings
- 1 Clapper Bridge crossing
- 2 bogs
- 1 volcano ascent
- long uphill start and long downhill finish
A designated aid station at about 6.3 miles supplies drinks and a small selection of snacks. Qualified paramedics will attend the event. Competitors must carry mandatory kit, including trail running shoes, a backpack or waistpack, whistle, foil/survival blanket, waterproof jacket, headcover, a mobile phone with emergency numbers stored, and capacity to carry at least 250 ml of liquid. Dogs are not permitted on the race course. The race is run under UKA rules and is licensed by the Trail Running Association with permission from Dartmoor National Park Authority and land owners.
