About the race
The Dartmoor Prison Break on 22 May 2027 is an endurance challenge that starts at HMP Dartmoor. Entrants plan their own route from the prison with the aim of achieving the greatest straight line distance from the start within a fixed time limit. The prison setting is used for a unique start and spectators can watch participants depart.
There are three time categories:
- 6 hour Absconder
- 12 hour Delinquent
- 24 hour Felon
Routes must use public rights of way only and avoid bird nesting areas. All participants carry a GPS tracker for continuous monitoring by Event Control; the trackers include an SOS button. Entrants must carry a mobile phone and provide contact numbers to Event Control. Trackers must be returned to the tracking company after the event. Participants are responsible for their own support and onward travel. A mandatory kit list and a pre event equipment check are required; required items include waterproofs, a head torch, navigation (compass and maps), food, spare layers and a first aid kit. Minimum age is 18 years.
The event is organised by Dartmoor Search and Rescue Team Plymouth and proceeds go to that registered charity to support their operational objectives. Medals are given to all finishers. Entry fees from 1 January are £45 for the 6 hour, £55 for the 12 hour and £65 for the 24 hour category. Full event instructions are issued 2 to 3 weeks before the event. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
