The Darren Holloway Memorial Race the Buttermere Horseshoe
The Darren Holloway Memorial Race the Buttermere Horseshoe is a fell running event over the Buttermere fells based on the original Buttermere Horseshoe. It is organised from Loweswater Village Hall and includes long and short courses with significant ascent.
The route is flagged to the fells at Lanthwaite Green. Once on the tops there is considerable route choice between checkpoints. Descent from Mellbreak is via the col between the North and South summits; the route off the North summit is out of bounds and slower. GPS is not allowed for navigation and the route is not flagged on the fells.
Distances and ascent
- Long course: 35.5 km with 2515 m ascent.
- Short course: 20.8 km with 1518 m ascent.
Entries open 1 April and close 1 July. Event minimum age is 18 or older. Entry fees shown include FRA member and non member categories.
Competitors must carry the full FRA kit list. There will be a full kit check for everyone before registration and no kit means no race. Weather on the tops is likely to be cloudy and runners can be isolated at times so navigation experience on fells is required.
Parking for runners is free in Loweswater opposite the phone box at NY143211. No dogs are allowed in the village hall. The long course forms part of the Lakeland Classics Trophy. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
