Darren Holloway Memorial Race (Buttermere Horseshoe)
The Darren Holloway Memorial Race, often referred to as the Buttermere Horseshoe, is an established fell running event held in the Lake District. In memory of Pennine Fell Runner Darren Holloway, the race traverses the fells around Buttermere. The event is based at Loweswater Village Hall and requires participants to be at least 18 years old.
The race offers two distinct courses, both of which are classified as AL (Long Alpine) fell races:
- Original Course: 35.5 km with 2515 m of ascent.
- Short Course: 20.8 km with 1518 m of ascent.
Participants must be experienced in fell running and mountain navigation, as the course is only flagged for the initial section to the fells at Lanthwaite Green. Once on the summits, runners must choose their own routes between checkpoints. Standard navigation via GPS is not permitted. Participants may find themselves running alone in cloudy conditions and must be prepared for varied Lake District weather.
The event follows strict safety protocols. A full kit check is conducted for all participants during registration, adhering to the Fell Runners Association (FRA) requirements. Runners who do not possess the required equipment will not be permitted to start. Free parking is provided in Loweswater, and refreshments are available for participants upon completion of the race. The long course is recognized as part of the Lakeland Classics Trophy. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
