Trail Running at Tryon International Equestrian Center
The Dark Horse Trail Series takes place at the Tryon International Equestrian Center in Mill Spring, North Carolina. The event utilizes the grounds of this equestrian venue, located in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Participants run through a landscape that includes rolling hills, forests, and grassy meadows.
The race follows a 6.5 mile loop that consists of wide packed dirt paths, single-track trails, and meadows. Each loop features approximately 600 feet of elevation gain. The event offers three distinct distances:
- 10k (one loop)
- 13.1 Miles (two loops)
- 26.2 Miles (four loops)
The marathon distance has a total time limit of 6 hours, and participants must begin their final lap before the 5-hour mark. The start and finish area is located near the General Store. Several amenities are available within sight of this area, including a breakfast diner, coffee shop, convenience store, restaurants, and indoor bathrooms.
This is a cup-less event, and participants are required to bring their own hydration vessels. A single aid station is positioned at the start and finish line, providing water, soda, and various snacks such as pickles, cookies, and pretzels. Participants may also utilize a drop bag area at the start and finish line. Camping space is available for participants and crews, though these sites do not provide water or power connections.
