Trail Racing at Carvins Cove Natural Reserve
Conquer the Cove features trail races held at the Carvins Cove Natural Reserve in Roanoke, Virginia. This municipal park spans 12,700 acres and serves as a major water source for the region. The area contains approximately 40 miles of roads and trails, providing a network for both running and riding activities.
Participants can choose from the following course options:
- 25k (15.86 miles) trail race.
- Marathon (26.46 miles) trail race.
- Virtual 25k (15.86 miles) available for remote participation.
- Virtual Marathon (26.46 miles) available for remote participation.
The marathon distance includes approximately 3,500 feet of total elevation gain. A significant portion of this climbing, about 1,000 feet, takes place after the 18-mile mark. Following the final ascent, the course transitions into 2.35 miles of downhill terrain, finishing with a final 2-mile section toward the headquarters at Sherwood Archers.
The event occurs during a time of year when mountain laurel and rhododendrons are typically in bloom. Approximately 80 percent of the park's trails are utilized for the races, and the paths are marked and maintained for the event. These races serve as the anchor event for the Roanoke Non Ultra Trail Series (RNUTS). Virtual participants who register before specified deadlines receive a race shirt or alternative items such as socks or headwear. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
