Clwydian Hills Fell Race
The Clwydian Hills Fell Race is a mountain fell event around Cilcain. The main race covers 14.2 km with approximately 910 m of ascent and is open to runners over 18 only. Online entry fee is £8 and entries on the day are £10; entries open on Fabian4.
Location details include grid reference SJ 177 653 and a SatNav postcode CH7 5NN for the village hall. The race uses Cilcain Water Works as the start area with postcode CH7 5PF and finishes at the village hall. The final couple of miles into the village include narrow roads from most directions; the route in from the A541 is noted as the wider approach. Parking at the Waterworks is limited; alternatives are the Viewpoint parking or on-street in the village with care for residents and access points.
A staffed kit dump operates at the village hall for bags and car keys while runners are on the fells. As a Category A race (Hard) mandatory kit includes a windproof full body cover, waterproof full body cover which may be required to be worn or carried, a map with no GPS mapping allowed, a compass (digital compass is acceptable), a whistle, hat or buff, gloves, and sufficient food and drink. The organiser notes that weather can be poor and refers to the race information sheet for full kit details.
The route was revised in 2025 with a new control point CP4 added; runners now head from the summit directly toward the village hall with a sharp descent following the old Mountain Race zig zags.
