Classic City Marathon
The Classic City Marathon takes place in Athens, Georgia, and features a variety of race distances held on USATF certified courses. The event includes the following options:
- Marathon (26.2 miles)
- Half Marathon (13.1 miles)
- Marathon Relay (four-person teams with legs of approximately 6 miles)
The courses start in historic downtown Athens and utilize a loop format. Participants run through downtown streets, various neighborhoods, university campuses, and scenic greenways. The route includes rolling hills characteristic of the north-Georgia Piedmont region. The final portion of the race follows Milledge Avenue, passing through the historic Greek Life area and Five Points business district before returning to the downtown area.
For participant support, water and electrolyte drinks are provided every 2-3 miles. The event utilizes silicone cups that are collected and sanitized for reuse. Energy gels are available at specific points, and fruit is provided at roughly Mile 20 of the marathon course. Professional chip timing is used to track progress, with timing mats located at the start, finish, and relay exchange points.
The event features course entertainment including local bands, DJs, and designated cheer zones. A specific competition called the Home-Stretch Mile tracks the fastest times over the final mile of both the marathon and half marathon. A post-race festival is held near the finish line, offering music, food, and activities. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
