Event Overview
The MISSION Adventure Race is an annual endurance event held at the Deam Lake State Recreation Area in Indiana. Established in 2003, it is recognized as a long-running and competitive multi-sport challenge. Participants navigate through the landscape using only a map and compass to locate specific checkpoints. The event is designed to keep participants active for nearly the entire duration, with a scoring system based on the total number of checkpoints reached.
The event offers two distinct course lengths:
- 18-Hour Race: A full-length endurance challenge involving trekking, cycling, and paddling.
- MISSION Lite: A 4-hour introductory version featuring less complex navigation and a reduced gear list for those new to adventure racing.
Race Disciplines and Teams
Participants compete in teams of two or three people, or in a solo division. In the team categories, all members must remain within 100 feet of each other at all times. Disciplines include on-road and off-road cycling, trekking, and paddling. Specialized navigational skills are required, such as plotting UTM coordinates at a 1:25,000 scale. Canoes or kayaks are used for the paddling segments, with boats provided by the organizers.
Equipment and Logistics
The race is self-sufficient, and participants must carry mandatory gear. Required items for each individual include a backpack, emergency space blanket, hydration system, headlamp, and a whistle. Teams must also carry a compass, first aid kit, and tools for bicycle repair. While GPS tracking is used for live monitoring, the use of GPS devices for navigation is strictly prohibited. The event includes a pre-race meal on Friday evening and a post-race meal upon completion. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
