Childish Nonsense is an ultrarunning event held in Palatine, IL at Deer Grove Forest Preserve west and organized by Cussing Runner. The event offers multiple distances run on a looped trail; the course surface is mostly a wide path with little technical terrain.
Distances include:
- 50 Miler
- 50K
- 25K
- 5.5 Miler
Runners complete laps of the loop: 5.5 milers run one lap, 25K runners complete three laps, 50K runners complete six laps, and 50 milers complete nine laps. There is a single aid station located at the start/finish, which runners encounter approximately every 5.5 miles. Outside crew access is limited to the start/finish area. Fifty-mile entrants may use a pacer after four laps. The cutoff time for all distances is 7pm.
The organizer describes the event atmosphere as playful, with planned shenanigans during the day intended to evoke a sense of childhood fun. The organizing group, CUSS Running, states a mission to add whimsy to ultrarunning and to build community. The event includes intentional inclusion measures: free entry codes are available for BIPOC and LGBTQ+ athletes as an affirmation of belonging, codes are distributed while funding allows, and entrants may register under their declared gender.
