Event Overview

The Chevy Chase is a 20-mile fell running and walking event. The 2026 event is its 69th edition. There are two entry options: a competitive run and a non-competitive challenge walk. The walk follows the same route but starts one hour earlier. Participants must be able to navigate using a map and compass. The course is not marked, so runners may choose their own path between the manned checkpoints. The route includes summiting Cheviot (815m) and Hedgehope (714m).

Course and Logistics

The course uses tracks, footpaths, and rough fell, with only a short road section. There is a time limit of 6 hours for runners and 7 hours for walkers. The event centre and finish are at the Wooler Youth Hostel. Registration opens from 7:30 AM.

Mandatory Equipment

All competitors must carry specific equipment, subject to random checks. This includes full waterproof body cover, a map, a compass, a whistle, emergency food and drink, and other weather-appropriate clothing like a hat, gloves, and a fleece. GPS alone is not an acceptable substitute for a compass.

Entry and Event Details

Entry is online through a third-party platform. The event has a participant limit of 300, with additional entries placed on a waiting list. The event is affiliated with the Association of Running Clubs (ARC). Parking is provided in designated areas; participants are asked not to park elsewhere in Wooler. Official retirement points are Hawsen Burn Bridge and Carey Burn Bridge. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
