Event overview
The Chevy Chase is a 20-mile fell race in Northumberland organised by Wooler Running Club. The 69th edition is scheduled for 4 July 2026 and entries open on 1 February 2025. The event is limited to 300 competitors, with a waiting list once the limit is reached. The race is affiliated to the Association of Running Clubs (permit ARC/25/0060). There are two options: the competitive run and the Chevy Chase Challenge Walk. The walk follows the same route, is non-competitive, records times at checkpoints and has a 7-hour time limit; running is not permitted in the walk.
Route, safety and logistics
The unmarked route crosses upland terrain with tracks, footpaths, sheep paths and rough fell, and includes summits of Cheviot (815 m / 2676 ft) and Hedgehope (714 m / 2348 ft). Competitors must visit manned checkpoints in order; navigation by map and compass is required and GPS alone is not acceptable. Required kit includes full waterproof whole-body cover, additional body layers (hat, gloves, fleece), whistle, map (preferably waterproof), compass and emergency food and drink. Random kit checks will be carried out at the start and finish. The event centre and finish are at Wooler Youth Hostel, Cheviot Street, NE71 6LW. Main car parking is at the long-stay car park at the north end of the High Street, behind the church; some 4x4 parking is available separately. Retirement points and checkpoint grid references are provided for safety and monitoring. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
