Capital Backyard Ultra
The Capital Backyard Ultra is a Last Runner Standing event held at Meadowood Special Recreation Management Area in Lorton, Virginia (10702 Harley Rd). The format uses repeated one-hour loops and continues until only one runner completes an extra loop beyond all others.
The course is a 4.167-mile (6.7056 km) loop. The format requires runners to be in the starting corral at the bell, begin with the bell, and complete each loop within the hour. During a yard runners may not leave the course except for restroom use, receive personal aid, use pacing, or employ artificial aids. Crews and spectators must remain out of the active course area.
The event provides on-site staging beneath a large pavilion with crew setups positioned close to the starting corral. Course features include a runnable rolling daytime loop and a paved night loop. The aid station is staffed by two professional chefs who are experienced ultrarunners and provide premium food and refreshments between yards.
Entry is limited to 65 runners. Invitations are issued on a rolling basis and automatic entry is available to runners who have completed a 100-mile race and to previous Capital Backyard Ultra participants; beginning December 1, 2026, 50-mile finishers may also receive invitations if space remains. The all-inclusive entry fee for 2027 is $225 and includes a dedicated 12x12 crew/tent space, Friday overnight camping, chef-supported aid station and race food, premium refreshments, an official race hat, and an official race shirt.
Official results record the total number of yards completed by each participant. The winner is the final runner to complete one more yard than every other participant. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
