About the race
The Call My Name 5K on February 21, 2027, is the fifth annual run held at the Carillon Garden on the Clemson University campus in Clemson, SC. The event honors predominantly Black convicted laborers, boys and men ages 14 to 67, whom Clemson College trustees leased from the state penitentiary between 1890 and 1914. Those laborers helped construct red brick campus buildings and other campus infrastructure.
The project documents and shares the stories of African Americans in Clemson University history and the 5K route tours the campus while paying tribute to those stories. Buildings noted in the event materials include Sikes Hall, Tillman Hall/Old Main, Trustee House, and Hardin Hall. The laborers also cleared land and constructed roads, sidewalks, and a dike that continue to serve the campus community.
Event options listed by the organizer include a 5K run or walk, a student 5K rate for full or part-time Clemson University students, and a Sleep In option that provides a race t-shirt. Registration opens November 6, 2026. Published fees are $30.00 for the standard 5K, $20.00 for the student 5K, and $20.00 for the Sleep In option. The event lists a partnership with Freshman Council to raise funds for the associated organization. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
