Buttermere Shepherd's Meet Fell Race
The event is scheduled for 25 October 2026 at Gatesgarth, Buttermere. The current course, in use from 2021, runs from Gatesgarth to the summit of Robinson and back. An earlier course used until 2019 ran from Buttermere Village to Whiteless Breast and return.
There are multiple junior races alongside the main race. U16 and U18 runners may enter the main race; there is also a 2 km race for U14 and U12 and a 1 km race for U10. U16 runners may choose to run in the U14/U12 race if they prefer. Minimum ages are U10 for junior races and U16 for senior entry. Entry on the day is accepted with fees of £2 for juniors and £5 for seniors; there is no overall entry limit.
The race is Category AS and lists ascent and distance as follows
- 3 miles, 1969 ft ascent
- 5 km, 600 m ascent
Parking is at Gatesgarth farm yard or field near the venue. Entry includes a warm drink and snack. Runners are asked not to recce the start and finish because they are on private land.
Required kit includes waterproof jacket and trousers, hat and gloves, map, compass and whistle. Organisers note that kit requirements may be reduced at their discretion on race day.
