Butterfield Canyon Marathon and Half Marathon

The event is a trail marathon and half marathon that starts and finishes at Butterfield Trailhead Regional Park in Herriman, Utah. The courses use extensive single track, fire road, and dirt road through Butterfield and Yellow Fork Canyons with views of nearby mine features and surrounding mountains. Navigation is marked with pink flags, ribbons, signs, and trail marshals; wrong way trails are marked with red flags.

Registration includes a race shirt, locally made finisher and age medals, free race photos, live results, a Great Harvest Bread post race breakfast, and well stocked aid stations. Parking is free around the pavilion. Packet pickup is available Friday 3 pm to 6 pm at the Salt Lake Running Company store in Sandy; race day pickup is available at the venue.

The marathon totals 26.2 miles with +4,556 ft elevation gain and a surface mix of about 72 percent dirt trail, 17 percent fire road, and 10 percent dirt road. Marathon runners must carry a hydration vest or bottle because aid stations are widely spaced. The race enforces a strict cutoff that requires an average pace faster than 17 minutes 22 seconds per mile.

The half marathon is 13.1 miles with +1,950 ft elevation gain, about 81 percent dirt trail, 9 percent fire road, and 8 percent dirt road. A hydration vest or bottle is strongly recommended for the half because there is only one aid station. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
