Butterfield Canyon Marathon
The Butterfield Canyon event in Herriman, Utah, offers a marathon and a half marathon on trails that start and finish at the Butterfield Trailhead Regional Park near the Kennecott Mine. The courses use extensive single-track trails, fire roads, and dirt roads through wooded areas and ridge sections with mountain views. Runners will encounter steep rocky climbs and long single-track descents.
Distances and key metrics:
- Marathon - 26.2 miles, +4,556 ft elevation total
- Half marathon - 13.1 miles, +1,950 ft elevation total
Course composition and segments are described by the organizer. The marathon route lists three segments with detailed mileages and elevation changes; the half marathon lists two segments. Surface breakdown for each distance is provided: mostly dirt trail with portions of fire road and dirt road. Aid stations carry Tailwind, water, Honey Stinger gels and waffles, fruit, and other snacks; aid stations are widely spaced, so a hydration vest or bottle is recommended for the marathon and strongly recommended for the half marathon.
Course navigation uses pink flags, ribbons, signs, and trail marshals; wrong-way routes are marked with red flags indicating stop. Packet pickup is available at a local running store the day before and on race day. Runners receive a quality race shirt, a locally made finisher medal, free race photos, live results, and a post-race breakfast provided by Great Harvest Bread. The organizer limits entries to keep field sizes small and relies on local support and volunteers. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
