Event overview
The Butterfield Canyon races take place at the Butterfield Trailhead Regional Park in Herriman, UT, on August 8, 2026. Two distances are offered:
- 26.2 miles (marathon)
- 13.1 miles (half marathon)
Both events use single-track trails, dirt roads, and fire roads through wooded canyons and mountain ridges. Runners receive a race shirt and a custom locally made finisher medal. Post-race refreshments include items from Great Harvest Bread, chocolate milk, orange juice, and fruit. Free race photos will be taken and hosted online without a watermark. Overall awards and age-division medals are given for top finishers; first-place overall winners also receive gift cards from a local running store.
Course and logistics
The marathon starts and finishes at Butterfield Trailhead Regional Park (8307 Herriman Hwy). Course details: the marathon covers 26.2 miles with about +4,556 ft total elevation gain and is roughly 72% dirt trail, 17% fire road, 10% dirt road. The half covers 13.1 miles with about +1,950 ft total elevation gain and is roughly 81% dirt trail, 9% fire road, 8% dirt road. The marathon requires a hydration vest or bottle; the half strongly recommends one. Aid stations supply Tailwind, water, Honey Stinger products, and fruit. The course is marked with pink flags and ribbons; red flags indicate wrong-way at major intersections. Packet pickup is Friday 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm at Salt Lake Running Store in Sandy. Late registration runs from July 8 to August 7; same-day registration is not available. Free parking is available around the pavilion.
