Butcombe Trail Ultra

The Butcombe Trail Ultra is a self-navigation trail running event held in the Mendip Hills, a designated area of outstanding natural beauty. The course is primarily off-road and follows a route that criss-crosses the landscape, providing views of the surrounding countryside. The 2026 edition features two distinct race distances:

  • 50 Miles
  • 50 Kilometres

The route is based on a 47-mile hiking trail originally devised in 2007, which traditionally passes several local pubs. Both race distances follow an anti-clockwise direction starting and finishing at the Mendip Activity Centre in Churchill.

These races serve as qualifying events for the UTMB and sister races. The 50 mile distance is categorized as a 100 km index race, while the 50 km distance is a 50 km index race. Runners in the longer distance must have completed at least one trail marathon since January 2025. Participants in both categories are expected to be proficient in self-navigation.

The event utilizes tracking devices for all participants to aid in timing accuracy and safety. Mandatory kit must be carried throughout the duration of the race. The event is organized by Town and Country Harriers (TACH), with proceeds supporting the Mendip Hills Fund to assist in local environmental and community conservation. Prize categories include an Open category available to all competitors and a Female category following specific athletic criteria. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
