The course has an elevation gain of 138 ft and volunteer hydration support along the route, with water and cider at the finish.
The event includes a Kids' Dash with short 200–300 m age-group dashes and awards for every participating child. Participants age 11 and up receive an official race t-shirt and a finisher medal. The event also features a costume contest, post-race pie and cider, and live results. Dogs and strollers are permitted on the course; the course remains open for 90 minutes after the start.
Packet pickup is offered on multiple days before race morning and at a race-morning tent; one pre-race pickup location is Hat Creek Burger Co in downtown Buda. The Buda Turkey Trot is presented by Sunfield and donates net proceeds to Outsiders Anonymous, a San Marcos nonprofit that provides free fitness training and a sober community for people in recovery.
