Event Overview

The Buck 50 is a trail running event held in Kattskill Bay, New York, situated within the southern Adirondacks. The course takes place on the shores of Lake George and utilizes rugged, remote trails that traverse significant elevation changes. Participants follow a route that includes climbing four of the tallest peaks in the Lake George area.

Course Details

The race follows a 50 km route (approximately 32.5 miles) with a total elevation gain of 9,000 feet. The course begins at Camp Chingachgook on Pilot Knob Road and proceeds through several landmark locations:

  • Buck Mountain trail via a dirt path.
  • Sleeping Beauty trail via Shelving Rock and Dacy Clearing Road.
  • Black Mountain trail via Fishbrook Pond.
  • Black Mountain Point on the shore of Lake George.
  • Erebus Mountain shoulder before returning to Dacy Clearing Road.

The final segment requires runners to climb back over Buck Mountain to return to the starting location at Camp Chingachgook.

Participation Requirements

Due to the technical nature of the terrain and logistical requirements, the event organizers require participants to have prior ultra-trail experience. Acceptable qualifications include recent finishes at ultra-distance trail races or significant performances at sub-ultra or non-trail events.

Support and Time Limits

The course features four aid stations located at Dacy Clearing Road, Black Mountain trail, and Black Mountain Point. Strict time limits are enforced at specific intervals to ensure safety, with a final cutoff of 12 hours to complete the full distance at the finish line. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
