Event Overview
Bruce's Crown Race is a team endurance event held in the heart of Galloway, starting and finishing at Caldons, near Glentrool. The course centers on a classic route that traverses three distinct hill ranges in Southwest Scotland: the Minnigaff Hills, the Rhinns of Kells, and the Awful Hand. Organized in support of the Galloway Mountain Rescue Team (GMRT), the event contributes its proceeds toward the development of the rescue team's base in Newton Stewart.
Distance and Terrain
The race covers a total distance of 46 miles with a cumulative elevation gain of over 4000 metres. The terrain is characterized by a lack of established paths and testing underfoot conditions, requiring participants to possess strong navigation skills. On clear days, the elevated route offers views extending to the Southern Highlands, the Lake District, Snowdonia, and the Mountains of Mourne.
Participation Details
The event is open to participants aged 18 and older. Runners must compete in teams of two, three, or four members.
- 46 miles
Teams must remain together throughout the duration of the event and check into all control points as a complete group. If a member of a four-person team retires at a designated checkpoint, the remaining members may continue as a smaller team. However, if a member of a two-person team retires, the remaining runner is also required to withdraw.
Support and Safety
The course features three manned checkpoints where participants are served hot soup, food, and drinks. For safety, personnel from the Galloway Mountain Rescue Team are stationed across the three hill ranges. The event has a total time limit of 24 hours to complete the course, with two specific cut-off points located along the route. For those staying overnight, camping is included in the entry fee.
