Brett/Robinson Alabama Coastal Triathlon : Gulf Shores, AL
The event is a USAT-sanctioned triathlon held at Gulf Shores West Beach Public Beach area (Town Green) and The Hangout. Courses use Gulf waters for the swim and follow beachfront roads for the bike and run segments. Average air temperature is listed as 78°F and average water temperature 84°F.
Distances:
- Sprint: Swim 300 m, Bike 12.4 mile, Run 2 mile.
- Olympic: Swim 1.5k, Bike 24.8 mile, Run 6 mile.
The swim is conducted in the ocean as a time-trial; race numbers are assigned by estimated swim time and entrants enter the water approximately every three seconds. Local water safety groups provide rescue support. If water conditions are unsafe, the swim may be replaced by a run and the event changed to a duathlon. Wetsuit use follows USAT rules and eligibility for awards may be affected by water temperature.
The bike course is the out-and-back "Tri-It-On" route on W. Beach Blvd with a BIKE MOUNT and DISMOUNT line; the Olympic distance is two loops of that route. The run courses are out-and-back on E. Beach Blvd east of The Hangout, with aid stations roughly every mile offering water and energy drinks.
Race logistics include assigned transition racks by race number, timing chips on disposable ankle bands, and packet pickup that requires photo ID with each racer picking up their own packet. Multiple race formats are offered including individual triathlon, swim-bike, bike-run, aquabike, and 2- or 3-person relays. Awards include overall, age-group, division, and relay categories.
