Event Overview

Bray Head is a mountain running event that takes a straight up-and-down route over the two summits of Bray Head in County Wicklow. The race uses a new route for 2025, starting at a barrier on the promenade.

Course Details

The main long-course distance is 7.30 km with 366 m of climb. A short course, also listed as the junior route, is 3.50 km. The route is fully marked, and the use of GPS devices is allowed. The terrain is described as moderate.

The new route starts at the promenade barrier and heads straight up to Bray Cross via a trail on the left. Runners touch the cross before proceeding over the headlands towards the Trig Point on Bray Head Hill. The course loops back down on the left side, past the old cable car and Raheen-a-Cluig ruins, finishing back at the start barrier. The junior route follows the main path but loops back after the gate down from Bray Cross.

Mandatory Kit

All runners must bring a specific kit to the event, designated as Level B - Standard. The required items are:

  • Waterproof jacket
  • Hat or buff
  • Gloves
  • Whistle
  • Charged mobile phone with an emergency number stored
  • Foil blanket, bivvy bag, or equivalent

Runners must also have the means to carry all kit. The final decision on what must be carried during the race will be made on the day based on conditions. Random kit checks may be carried out, and failure to have required items may lead to denied entry or disqualification.

Logistics

Registration takes place at the Martello Hotel, approximately 850 m from the start line. Registration opens at 18:00, with a strict cutoff at 19:00; runners not in the queue by this time will not be allowed to register. The long-course race starts at 19:30 for all participants. The short course/junior race starts at 19:35. As parts of the route are on public paths, runners are asked to be aware of pedestrians and other users.

Regular Dart and bus services serve Bray. Paid parking is available along the seafront and adjoining roads, and carpooling is encouraged. The event is part of the Leinster League and includes an optional post-race BBQ at the Martello Bar. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
