Braille Trail Walk for Independence
The Braille Trail Walk for Independence is a community walk at Lions Services Inc., 4600 North Tryon Street, Charlotte, NC. The event is the fourth annual walk and the first on the newly constructed Charlotte Braille Trail. One in-person route is listed at 1.86 miles, and a remote participation option allows people to walk from home.
The Charlotte Braille Trail is described as a multi-sensory path with tactile sculptures and fragrant gardens, combining nature, art, and accessible features. The in-person program includes a sponsored registration option where a sponsor pays a higher fee so a low vision team member may attend at no cost; both the sponsor and the sponsored participant receive a t-shirt. Standard and remote registration options are also available with distinct fees.
Fundraising and team participation are part of the event structure. Awards are planned for the largest teams and top fundraisers. Funds raised support Lions Services programs for blind and low vision people, including accessible technology and training, wellness support, and individualized services. The organizer has stated a fundraising goal of $100,000.
Registration is non-refundable. The event is planned to proceed in varied weather unless severe conditions occur. After the walk there is a celebration with food, music, and giveaways, and refreshments are provided. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
