Blue Hills Adventure Race
The Blue Hills Adventure Race is a one-day, 15-hour adventure race returning to Massachusetts. The event combines mountain biking, foot travel, paddling, and map-and-compass navigation across the Connecticut River Valley. The 2026 edition is scheduled for September 19, 2026, with check-in at Greenfield Middle School, 195 Federal Street, Greenfield, MA. Divisions include solos and single and mixed gender teams of two to four racers. The event is USARA sanctioned and awards points in both USARA national rankings and ARWS rankings. Racers must have an annual USARA membership or purchase a single-event license.
The course uses a modified rogaine format with a series of mandatory checkpoints and optional checkpoints for faster teams. Due to permitting constraints the route has somewhat less off-trail navigation than some past Rootstock Racing events, but navigational elements remain. Boats are BYOB and the paddle leg is approximately twelve miles; teams should expect to carry boats several hundred meters for launch and takeout and possibly over short shallow sections. Packrafts may be left inflated at the designated boat drop. Organizers identified two local vendors for boat rental. Maps will be provided on water-resistant paper in multiple sizes and typical scales, printed with a 1km UTM grid and noted magnetic declination. A mandatory gear list applies and teams may be penalized or disqualified for missing required equipment.
