Trail Running across the Blackall Range

The Blackall 100 is an ultra-trail running event held in Mapleton on the Sunshine Coast hinterland. The course traverses the Blackall Range, passing through subtropical rainforests, tall eucalypt forests, and ferny landscapes. Participants encounter various natural features, including waterfalls and hinterland hamlets. The event has historical significance, as the range served as a gathering place for Indigenous people for thousands of years.

The competition features three main distances:

  • 100 km with a total elevation gain of 3290 m.
  • 50 km with a total elevation gain of 1580 m.
  • 21 km with a total elevation gain of 580 m.

All races start and finish at the QCCC in Mapleton. The 100 km event is recognized as a qualifying race for the Western States Endurance Run (WSER). For safety, participants must carry mandatory gear, which includes a mobile phone, a course map, a race bib, a compression bandage, and a minimum water capacity (1 to 1.5 litres depending on the distance). High-visibility vests and headlamps are required for the 100 km distance and for 50 km runners on the course after 3:00 pm.

A drop bag service is available at specific checkpoints for runners without support crews. Checkpoints for the 100 km event are located at 22.5 km, 41 km, 64 km, 82 km, and 92 km. The event operates a "no cups" policy, meaning runners must provide their own cups at hydration stations. All finishers receive a commemorative bell as they cross the line.
