Black Mountain Relay
The Black Mountain Relay is a team-based relay across the Black Mountains in the Brecon Beacons, covering approximately 50 km. Each team must carry a single baton tracker that is passed between team members as they move along their chosen route. The final distance can vary depending on each team’s route choice and navigation.
Teams consist of a minimum of 5 and a maximum of 10 runners. There are no set legs or fixed distances for individual runners: handovers can occur at any point, runners may pair up, and a runner may be used more than once. Geo gateways act as required GPS waypoints but are not fixed checkpoints and may be visited in any order the team decides. The baton must pass through these gateways with a registered team runner present.
A team captain plans the order of runners and the intended segments; the captain does not have to be a running team member. Start location and the GPS gateway details are disclosed 14 days before the event date. The course layout changes each year to vary route choices and tactics. A playback video of past events shows notable variation in the routes teams choose, including a measured difference of about 6 km between some team routes.
Entries for the 2027 event are open. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
