Birmingham Canal Canter
The Birmingham Canal Canter is a circular walking and running event based at Moseley Rugby Club, Billesley Common, Yardley Wood Road, Birmingham B13 0TP. The event route explores Birmingham's canal network and parts of the River Cole Valley Way and includes urban and industrial heritage along with riverside and reservoir sections.
There are three route options:
- 18.5 miles - River and canal route
- 26.5 miles - Marathon route including Edgbaston Reservoir and the Soho Loop
- 30 miles - Extended route with a visit to Spaghetti Junction
Routes run largely off road, with around 98% off-road surfaces, very few road crossings and no stiles. The marathon route passes under Curzon Street and Ashfield Road tunnels; the maxi route includes Spaghetti Junction. Canal sections include the Stratford Canal, Worcester and Birmingham Canal, New Main Line, Fazeley and Grand Union Canals, and the River Cole. Notable sights include Bournville, Birmingham city centre and Gas Street Basin, Edgbaston Reservoir, Mathew Boulton's Soho Manufactory, Winson Green and Sarehole Mill.
Checkpoints are provided on each route with food and cold drinks; participants must bring a mug or drinking vessel as cups will not be supplied. The finish area offers hot and cold drinks, a meal with vegetarian and vegan options, showers, free parking, a finisher badge and a certificate. Routes and GPX files are issued before the event.
