Bighorn Trail Run
Bighorn Trail Run is a multi-distance ultra running event in the Bighorn Mountains with race dates on June 19 to 20, 2026. All distances are full and the event maintains wait lists. Distances offered include:
- 100 Mile
- 52 Mile
- 32 Mile
- 18 Mile
The flagship Bighorn Mountain Trail 100 is an out and back course crossing the Little Bighorn and Tongue River areas inside the Bighorn National Forest. Runners have 35 hours to complete the 100 mile course. The route includes about 20,500 feet of ascent and 20,750 feet of descent, with roughly 76 miles of technical single track, 16 miles of rugged 2 track jeep trail, and 8 miles of gravel road. Some backcountry stretches are 18 miles long and serve as the only access.
Terrain is technical and variable, with steep climbs, difficult downhills, mud, and frequent weather and temperature changes. Course markings include orange flagging tape, wire ground flags in meadows, white lime arrows at some junctions, reflective tape, and glow sticks for night sections. Wildlife such as elk, deer, moose, black bear, mountain lions, and rattlesnakes may be present in lower elevations.
Volunteers staff aid stations and provide first aid and trail support, but crew access is limited. Participants are expected to study the course and carry necessary equipment for remote mountain conditions. The event operates under a special use permit with the Bighorn National Forest and is an equal opportunity provider. Packet pickup is held at the Best Western Sheridan Center and the finish celebration uses Scott Bicentennial Park in Dayton. Mile 90 photography is provided and photos are available for download as part of race swag. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
