Bighorn Trail Run
Bighorn Trail Run is a community-organized, multi-event trail running weekend held in the Bighorn Mountains and portions of the Bighorn National Forest. The race was created to raise public awareness of the Dry Fork and Little Bighorn River drainages and to help preserve the local mountain environment. The event emphasizes community values, volunteer support, and a remote mountain experience.
Distances offered include:
- 100 Mile
- 52 Mile
- 32 Mile
- 18 Mile
The Bighorn Mountain Trail 100 is an out-and-back course that crosses Little Bighorn and Tongue River areas. Runners have a 35 hour cutoff and the course profile lists about 20,500 feet of ascent and 20,750 feet of descent. The route includes approximately 76 miles of technical single-track, 16 miles of rugged 2-track jeep trail, and 8 miles of gravel road. Long stretches of up to 18 miles provide the only access in and out of some backcountry sections.
Course terrain and conditions include steep climbs, difficult downhills, mud, and technical sections. Weather can change rapidly and wildlife such as elk, deer, moose, black bear, mountain lions, and rattlesnakes may be present. Trail markings use orange flagging, ground flags, white lime arrows, reflective tape, and glow sticks for night sections; markings are periodically replaced during the event. Volunteers staff aid stations and provide first aid and support. The event operates under a special use permit with the Bighorn National Forest and is an equal opportunity provider. For 2026 the race dates are June 19 and June 20. All distances are listed as full and wait lists are maintained. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
