The Bighorn Mountain Trail 100 is an out and back mountain course that crosses the Little Bighorn and Tongue River areas. Participants are given 35 hours to complete the 100 mile course, which the organizers describe with an average pace estimate of 2.94 mph, over 20,500 feet of ascent and 20,750 feet of descent. The 100 mile route includes about 76 miles of technical single track, 16 miles of 2 track jeep trail, and 8 miles of gravel road. Some stretches provide the only access for up to 18 miles.
Course wayfinding includes orange flagging, wire ground flags in meadows, white lime arrows at some junctions, and reflective tape or glow sticks for night sections. Volunteers maintain aid stations, provide staffing and first aid, and prepare trails in the weeks before the event. The course passes through habitat shared with elk, deer, moose, black bear, mountain lions, and rattlesnakes. Packet pick up is handled at the Best Western Sheridan Center in downtown Sheridan, and the finish celebration is held at Scott Bicentennial Park in Dayton. Race photography is provided by Mile 90 with photos available for free download and included as race swag. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
