Event Overview
The Beckley Half Marathon and 5K is an athletic event organized by Active Southern West Virginia. The races begin and end at the Beckley Exhibition Coal Mine, a historic preservation site featuring an underground mine, original coal camp buildings, and vintage equipment. This location serves as the central hub for the activities in Beckley, West Virginia.
Participants can choose between two main distances:
- Half Marathon (13.1 Miles): A course that utilizes local rail trails and passes through the uptown area.
- 5K Run/Walk: An out-and-back route designed for both runners and walkers.
The half marathon route follows the scenic rail trail for a significant portion of the distance, transitioning through the uptown district before returning to the trail for the finish. Registration for the 5K is free for children aged 12 and under.
Registered participants receive a commemorative t-shirt and a finisher medal upon completion. Post-race amenities include a meal consisting of bean soup, cornbread, and West Virginia pepperoni rolls. Awards are provided for top finishers in various age categories, ranging from 0-12 to 70 and over for both male and female divisions.
The event organizers do not mail bibs, shirts, medals, or awards by default. If a participant requires items to be shipped after the event, a fee is requested to cover shipping and handling. Registrants also have access to the RunSignup referral program and optional event insurance. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
