About the race
The Beast of the Beacons is a trail running event based at Henderson Hall, Talybont on Usk, in the Brecon Beacons National Park. It offers marked routes over natural terrain with staffed checkpoints and on-route support.
Distances offered:
- 10 Miles / 16 km
- 20 Miles / 32.5 km
- 40 Miles / 65 km (second lap is a reversed version of the 20 mile route)
The route runs over forests, mountains, rivers and reservoirs and includes climbs, rocky sections, soft forest trails, mud and possible snow. Wildlife such as red kites may be seen. The course is marked and marshalled; checkpoints are described as well stocked and cater for dietary requirements including vegan options, with items such as fruit, nuts, snacks, electrolyte drinks and water.
The event is canicross friendly. Dogs must be at least 12 months old, fit to run, kept on the lead at all times and are the owner’s responsibility. The organiser states that canicross participants cannot be allocated trophies.
Facilities at the event include toilets, a coffee van, a pizza van, local parking and a full medical team. Participants receive a bespoke medal and podium prizes; online results and a full photo gallery are provided.
A mandatory kit list is enforced and checked at registration. Required items include waterproof jacket and trousers, race vest or pack, appropriate base layer, capacity to carry one litre of fluid, emergency food, map or GPX, charged mobile phone, hat and gloves, trail footwear, first aid kit, foil blanket, reusable cup, headtorch with spare batteries and a whistle.
