Bears Ears Ultra : Monticello, Utah
Bears Ears Ultra is a high-elevation trail race held in the Abajo Mountains near Monticello, Utah. The course runs through Bears Ears National Monument and passes views of Canyonlands National Park, Bears Ears Buttes, Monument Valley, Dead Horse Point State Park, Six Shooter Peaks, Behind the Rocks, and the La Sal and San Juan mountain ranges. The region includes ancestral lands of the Navajo Nation, Ute Mountain Ute Tribe, Hopi Tribe, and Pueblo of Zuni.

The race climbs into remote alpine terrain, topping out near 11,000 feet on the Robertson Pasture Trail. Course statistics for selected distances include notable elevation ranges and gains: the 50 mile course reaches a high near 10,727 feet with over 10,400 feet of elevation gain, the 50K reaches above 10,525 feet with about 6,854 feet of gain, and the 13K tops near 9,331 feet with roughly 1,339 feet of gain. Runners use largely little-traveled singletrack and alpine roads.
Aid stations are cupless; water dispensers are located at the start/finish area and at every aid station for filling bladders, bottles, or reusable cups. The start and finish share the same location on Forest Rd. 5419 near GPS 37.91956, -109.47558. Packet pickup is scheduled the day before the race at Veteran's Memorial Park in Monticello, and a photo ID is required to receive a packet.
