Bat Challenge

The Bat Challenge is a flexible distance running and walking event held at Beacon Hill Country Park in Leicestershire. Participants navigate a 3.3-mile (approx. 5.3 km) off-road loop, with the option to complete as many laps as desired within a 6-hour time limit. This format allows for various total distances, such as:

  • Half Marathon: 4 laps
  • Marathon: 8 laps
  • Ultra Distances: 50km or more (9+ laps)

The event starts in the late afternoon, allowing participants to experience the course in daylight, at dusk, and in complete darkness. The route follows well-maintained crushed stone pathways that climb from the lower car park toward the park's higher points before descending back to the start. While the course features significant elevation changes and may be muddy depending on weather conditions, it is not considered technical underfoot.

For safety, all participants starting a lap after 7:00 PM are required to carry a head torch, as light fades quickly in the wooded areas. The event provides support and check-ins every 5k. Participants can take breaks between laps as needed.

Instead of a traditional medal, runners may opt for a wildflower seed token that funds the planting of a tree. The venue is located approximately 6 miles from Loughborough train station, and on-site parking is available for a fee. This event does not permit dogs. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
