Event Overview
The Barney to Beach: 20 Years of Hope is a multi-distance event taking place in North Devon. Reaching its third year, the 2026 edition also marks the 20th anniversary of the charity Families in Grief. The route follows a course from the Barnstaple Pannier Market through the countryside and along the Tarka Trail, concluding at Crow Point.
The event is open to runners and walkers, following a path described as "Town to Tide." The final segment of the long course involves a sprint across sand dunes toward the beach. Participants can choose from the following distances:
- 8 miles: The full course from Barnstaple to Crow Point.
- 1 mile: A children's fun run held at the dunes near the finish.
Participation and Logistics
The 8 miles course is open to individuals and teams. Children under 16 may participate in the full distance if accompanied by a parent or carer. The 1 mile fun run is specifically for children aged 4 to 16 and takes place at the Crow Point end of the route.
Due to the nature of the terrain, the course is not suitable for wheelchairs or pushchairs. Dogs are permitted to join participants who are walking the course, but they are not allowed to accompany runners.
Event organizers provide transport options for participants. A coach service is available to transport attendees between Sandy Lane and the start line in Barnstaple, or back from the finish line at the end of the day. An event village located five minutes from the finish line offers live music, refreshments, and children's entertainment.
Registration and Fundraising
Entries are available for individuals and teams, with a specific lower fee for the children's race. Financial contributions and sponsorship help support bereaved children and young people. All finishers receive a medal upon completion of their course. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
