Endurance Trail Running in Texas
The Bandera Endurance Trail Race takes place every January at the Hill Country State Natural Area in Bandera, Texas. The event features a variety of distances held on rugged terrain known for its steep hills and technical trails. The course primarily consists of a 50 km loop that runners navigate in a counterclockwise direction.
Participants can choose from several race distances:
- 100 km (two full laps with a 25 hour cutoff)
- 50 km (one full lap)
- 25 km (shorter loop)
- Youth 1 Mile (untimed race for children)
The 100 km distance serves as a qualifying race for the Western States Endurance Run. Runners who finish the 100 km course within 18 hours become eligible for the Western States lottery. This distance also allows the use of pacers after the completion of the first 50 km loop.
The course features approximately 3,300 feet of elevation gain per 50 km lap. While there is a flat section known as the "Race Track" near one of the aid stations, the majority of the route is characterized by gnarly trails, rocks, and sotol plants. The event is a cupless series, meaning runners must carry their own hydration vessels. Multiple aid stations provide support along the course, including options for drop bags at specific locations for 100 km participants.
Onsite primitive camping is available at the park for a fee, and the event hub at the Group Lodge offers a family friendly environment with backyard games and a youth trail run. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
