Backpack Run 2026
The Backpack Run takes place at Green Hill Park in Salem, Virginia. Organized by the Roanoke County Public Schools Education Foundation, the event offers multiple participation options including in-person and virtual formats. The 5K portion of the event is named the Marion Childress 5K in honor of a local running enthusiast.
Participants can choose from several distances and challenges:
- 5 km (Marion Childress 5K)
- 10 km
- Backpack Challenge (Completion of both the 5 km and 10 km distances)
Those who complete the Backpack Challenge receive individual finisher medals for both races plus a third exclusive challenge medal. Registrants have the option to participate as individuals or as part of adult or student teams. A virtual race option is also available for those unable to attend at the physical location in Salem.
The event utilizes a course located at Green Hill Park. Registration is open to both adults and students, with specific pricing tiers for each group. Race t-shirts are available for purchase, with a dedicated deadline for orders. Packet pickup is held the day before the event at RunAboutSports in Roanoke, where late registrations are also accepted for an additional fee.
