Event Overview
The Backbone Trail Ultra is an endurance event that traverses the entire Backbone Trail within the Santa Monica Mountains in Southern California. The course spans a total distance of 68 miles along a ridge-line path, beginning at Will Rogers State Park and finishing with a descent down the Ray Miller Trail.
The route features significant elevation changes, with approximately 13,600 feet of total gain. Participants experience views of the Pacific Ocean throughout the journey across the linked trail system.
Participation Options
The event offers two primary ways to complete the course:
- 68 Mile Solo: An individual ultra-marathon distance.
- Relay: A team version for groups of 2, 3, or 4 participants.
Entry Requirements and Limits
Registration for this event is capped at 200 total participants to maintain the quality of the experience. Individuals wishing to enter the solo 68-mile category must provide proof of having completed at least one previous 50-mile trail run. There are no specific qualification requirements for participants entering as part of a relay team.
