Austin's Backyard Ultra and Memorial Day Remembrance Run
The Austin Memorial Day Remembrance Run and Backyard Ultra take place at the Turkey Bend LCRA Recreation Area near Marble Falls, Texas. The event features a unified course that traces a peninsula along the Colorado River. Participants navigate a landscape consisting of open meadows, wildflower fields, and shaded Hill Country woodland with rolling terrain.
The weekend is divided into two distinct formats. The first is a sanctioned Backyard Ultra where runners attempt to complete a 4.2-mile loop every hour. This "last person standing" challenge continues until only one participant remains. The second format is the Memorial Day Remembrance Run, which includes traditional distances and ruck options. A moment of silence is held at the start line to honor the purpose of the day.
Available distances and categories include:
- Austin's Backyard Ultra (4.17-mile loops)
- 26.2 Miles
- 13.1 Miles
- 8 Miles (Run or Ruck)
- 4 Miles (Run or Ruck)
The course is anchored by a central start and finish corral near the park's main camping clusters. This area serves as a refueling station where personal crews can support runners between loops. The trail is marked with reflective markers to assist those running through nighttime hours. Participants who complete at least one loop receive a finisher medal, with specific medals provided for those reaching half-marathon, marathon, and ultra distances.
