Athens Big Fork Trail Marathon and 17 Mile Blaylock Creek Fun Run
The event comprises two out-and-back trail races on the Athens Big Fork Trail that begin and end at the Big Fork Community Center in Mena, Arkansas. It is the 28th annual running of the Athens Big Fork Trail Marathon and the 17 Mile Blaylock Creek Fun Run. Net proceeds are donated to the Big Fork Community Center and the Ouachita Amateur Radio Association.
Distances:
- 26.2 miles Marathon, out and back on the Athens Big Fork Trail.
- 17 mile (about 25K) Blaylock Creek Fun Run, out and back with a defined turnaround.
Full marathon runners climb eight named mountains twice for a total of sixteen mountain climbs and about 7,000 feet of cumulative elevation gain. The course is well marked and supported by three aid stations with typical aid-station fare and additional offerings from volunteer aid captains.
Safety and rules include a cupless race policy: every runner must carry a cup, handheld bottle, or hydration bladder. Required gear also includes a waist light or headlamp; a phone does not count as a light. Several aid stations are staffed by HAM radio operators and medical personnel will be on standby. There are enforced cutoffs at specified aid stations; runners who miss a cutoff may be required to turn back.
Registration is limited by a U.S. Forest Service permit. Bibs are non-transferable. Every finisher receives a commemorative finisher award; overall winners and long-term milestone finishers also receive special awards. Post-race meals and swag are available by preorder only.
