Aorangi Undulator

The Aorangi Undulator is a backcountry point-to-point running event that travels from the Mangatoetoe Carpark to the Putangirua Pinnacles. The route focuses on technical river travel, mud, scree, and steep descents. This event follows a route rather than a formal track, and course markings are strictly limited. Participants must be prepared for changing conditions and use GPS files or maps to navigate.

The course features manual timing with split points located at:

  • Kawakawa Hut
  • Pararaki Hut
  • Washpool Hut

Marshals are stationed only at the huts for timing and safety purposes. Due to the remote nature of the terrain, all entrants are required to carry a Personal Locator Beacon (PLB) or a satellite tracking device. In the event of unfavorable weather, the race may be cancelled or moved to an alternative course.

Logistically, the start and finish lines are separated by a 21 km drive. Parking is available at the Putangirua Pinnacles finish line, while space is limited at the Mangatoetoe start. Participants can leave warm clothing and personal belongings with volunteers at the start to be transported to the finish line. Local accommodation options include Te Kopi Homestead, Waimeha Campground, and the DOC Camp at the Pinnacles. The event concludes with a post-race BBQ and prize-giving once the final finisher arrives. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
