Aniseed Ascent
The Aniseed Ascent is the second edition of a trail running event held in the Aniseed Valley near Nelson. The course starts at Twin Bridges and runs through the Tasman Pine Forests estate on private dirt forestry roads that pass through pine-clad hills and varied terrain.
Both routes climb steadily through mixed-age pine forest and are entirely on dirt forestry roads. Runners should expect sustained climbs and sections of exposed backcountry terrain.
- 10 km : 385 m of climb and descent on forestry roads
- 20 km : 650 m of climbing with an exposed Shale Rd section
Aid stations are provided: one station for 10 km at the top of Meads Rd (6 km) and two stations for 20 km at top of Meads Rd (6 km) and bottom of Long Gully Rd (14 km). Stations are stocked with bananas, a mix of lollies and drink mix. Parking is in a private paddock adjacent to the Twin Bridges and is limited, so carpooling is encouraged. Cutoffs are 3.5 hours for the 10 km and 4.5 hours for the 20 km.
Compulsory gear requirements are specified by distance and include thermal clothing, a seam-sealed waterproof jacket for the 20 km, and gloves. Refunds are available prior to the week of the race minus a $10 admin fee; no refunds in the week before the event. If the event is cancelled for reasons outside organiser control a full refund minus $5 applies.
The event is a fundraiser to support travel to the United States for treatment of the autoimmune disorder SASH3. Tasman Pine Forests has provided access for the race. Dogs are permitted on leads, toilets are available at the event centre, music devices are permitted and participants are asked to take out their waste.
