Alpha Phi Thankful 5k Race
The Thankful 5k is a fundraising event organized by the Zeta Iota chapter of Alpha Phi in Charlottesville, Virginia. It brings together chapter members, family, and the wider UVA and Charlottesville community to honor the memory of a chapter member and to raise funds for higher education support.
All funds raised are donated to foundations and scholarships that provide financial assistance to students seeking or enrolled in higher education. One memorial scholarship is awarded to a Jefferson Scholars Foundation candidate from Southwest Virginia who reached the final selection round. A separate foundation established in connection with the event awards a college scholarship to students from Justice High School.
The event combines an in-person 5K held on the university grounds near Madbowl in Charlottesville with a weekend-long virtual component. The virtual option allows supporters to take part from locations across the nation while the on-grounds race returns as an in-person gathering. The race was created by chapter members after the loss of a sister in 2012 and has continued annually as a philanthropic event focused on scholarships and community support.
