About the race
The Alpha Challenge is an outdoor obstacle course event held at Dublin Bay, Wanaka. The event offers multiple experiences and distances across farm and trail terrain with natural and built obstacles.
Participants can choose from these events:
- 5 km obstacle course
- 10 km obstacle course
- Mini's (shorter out and back course for primary‑age kids)
- Adaptive course for adaptive entrants
- Alpha Adventure team event (teams of 4)
- Alpha Fit station challenge
The 5 km and 10 km courses include mud, water crossings, walls, carries (buckets and sandbags), climbs, crawls, monkey bars, rope climbs, tyre work, a multi rig, and an Olympus Wall among other obstacles. The 5 km and 10 km challenge format lists around eight main obstacles on course. Trails are rugged and may include rocks, roots, slippery surfaces, livestock and steep sections; water stations and event crew are provided on course.
There are competitive and open categories. The competitive waves are timed, require unaided obstacle attempts and carry specific penalties for failed obstacles; top competitive finishers qualify for OCR World Champs and results count toward NZOSA leaderboards. Open waves allow assistance between participants, shared penalties, and are not officially timed. Mini and adaptive events have tailored course formats and time allowances for younger and adaptive entrants.
