Outlet Backyard Ultra Wānaka
Outlet Backyard Ultra Wānaka is an inaugural Backyard-format event taking place on Saturday 27 February 2027 at Outlet Camp Wānaka. Outlet Camp is located at the head of the glacial-fed Mata-Au / Clutha River, Te Waipounamu's longest river, which flows more than 330 km to the Pacific Ocean.
The event site provides a spacious corral area for race set-up and a dedicated family camping area along the route. Camp fees are discounted for competitors, whanau, fans and support; primary crew and entrants have no camping fee, with additional discounted rates available on the Friday before the event.
The race uses a Backyard Ultra format with repeated yards on a 6.7 km trail. The route is a mix of well-drained moraine, packed forest floor, and single and wide Central Otago trail. Gradients are generally gentle, with most uphill sections around 1 percent and downhill sections up to 3 percent in places. Current elevation change is about 35 m, with possible adjustments to the course and maps still being finalised.
Each entrant is allocated a 3 by 3 metre space for their station. Organisers will provide course amenities including multiple toilets, and an external events partner will offer race kit support. Event rules follow the Backyard Ultra format, including hourly yard starts and the rule that the final winner is the last person to complete a yard.
