Event Overview

Afoot in Two Dales is a long-distance circuit through the Yorkshire Dales designed for experienced walkers and runners. The route covers a distance of 50 miles with 5,500 feet of total ascent. Participants must complete the course within a 22-hour time limit. The event uses footpaths, bridleways, and quiet roads to navigate through Wensleydale and Swaledale, featuring an ascent of Great Shunner Fell.

Course and Navigation

The circuit starts and finishes at Harmby Village Hall. The route passes through several locations, including Redmire, Haverdale, Muker, Hawes, Bainbridge, Thoralby, and West Witton. Detailed route descriptions and GPX files are provided by the organizers. Participants are required to carry the route description at all times and use it alongside a map or GPS device. Navigational skills are necessary, particularly for night-time movement over open moorland.

Mandatory Equipment and Tracking

For the first time, this event utilizes electronic trackers to assist with timekeeping and safety. These lightweight devices must be carried in a rucksack or bumbag. Suggested kit for the moorland terrain includes:

  • Suitable footwear
  • Waterproof top and trousers
  • Spare fleece
  • Compass and whistle
  • Torch with spare batteries
  • Emergency survival bag
  • Personal drinks and emergency food

Participants must also bring their own reusable mug, as cups are not provided at checkpoints.

Facilities and Logistics

Entry includes tea and toast during registration, refreshments at various checkpoints, a hot meal at the mid-way point, and a meal at the finish.
