A Run and Walk Through History
A Run Through History is a chip-timed athletic event held entirely within the grounds of the historic Metairie Cemetery in New Orleans. Established in 1872, the cemetery features narrow roadways and a unique atmosphere. This event is recognized as the largest run or walk held inside a cemetery in the nation. The 5K course is USATF-RRTC officially certified (# LA18013DR).
Participants can choose from the following distances:
- 5K (3.107 miles)
- 1K (0.62 miles)
The event supports Save Our Cemeteries, a part of the Preservation Resource Center. Custom finisher medallions are provided to participants, though those entering both distances are asked to take only one. The course includes directional signage and race officials at key sections, with a lead cyclist for each distance. Because of the historic nature of the site, some street sections have tree roots impacting the pavement, and participants are advised to watch their footing.
Post-race activities take place in the parking lot behind the funeral home. Refreshments available to participants include spring water, spinach salad, red beans and rice with sausage, and other local snacks. Custom commemorative T-shirts are included with registration, available in various youth and adult sizes. The event also offers a virtual division for those unable to attend in person.
