9/11 Memorial 5K Run/Walk & Kids Fun Run
The 9/11 Memorial 5K Run/Walk and Kids Fun Run is an annual athletic event held in Gorham, Maine. This year's edition commemorates the 25th anniversary of the September 11, 2001, attacks. The event serves as a tribute to Stephen G. Ward and all those lost on that day. All registration fees and proceeds are donated to the Stephen G. Ward Memorial Scholarship Fund, which provides financial assistance to local high school graduates pursuing secondary education.
Participants can choose from several event distances and categories:
- 3.1 Miles (5K Run/Walk)
- 3.1 Miles (Student Athlete 5K - no T-shirt)
- 1 Mile (Kids Fun Run)
The 1 Mile Kids Fun Run takes place at the Gorham High School track, located adjacent to the main venue. This portion of the event is divided by age group, with participants aged 8 and under completing one lap (0.25 mile) and those aged 9 and older completing two laps (0.50 mile). All participants in the fun run receive prizes and refreshments.
The 3.1 Miles 5K course begins following the National Anthem and remarks from the race director. A notable feature of the event is the group of first responders who complete the entire course in full gear to honor the 343 FDNY members lost in 2001. Post-race refreshments are provided for participants. Awards are presented to the overall male and female finishers, as well as the top two male and female finishers in age groups ranging from 13 to over 80 years old.
The event is held rain or shine at the Gorham Recreation Department. The first 100 registered 5K participants receive a commemorative event t-shirt. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
