About the race
The event is the 21st annual community running event in Mount Airy, held along the Granite City Greenway. The course begins at Riverside Park, follows the newest section of the greenway along Lovill's Creek to the SouthData parking lot and returns. The program includes a timed 5K race and a separate 1/2 mile fun run for younger participants.
Distances:
- 5K race
- 1/2 mile fun run
All 5K participants receive a custom finisher's medal. The 5K is chip timed by Go! Sports Timing; overall awards are based on gun time, and age group awards use chip time. Cash prizes are offered for overall male and female top finishers and age group awards are given across standard divisions from 10 & under up to 70 and over. A team fitness challenge awards the fastest team based on the average time of five finishing team members.
A special optional challenge, the Sonker Stomper Challenge, adds a midway food station where participants eat a warm bowl of Granny Ruth's Bakery sonker before continuing the race; fastest male and female to complete both the eating challenge and the race receive a small prize.
Packets may be picked up at Mount Airy Parks & Recreation/Reeves Community Center and on race day at Riverside Park. Registration deadlines determine shirt guarantees and fee levels. The event runs rain or shine. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
