Pilot Mountain Salamander Scamper - Event overview
The Pilot Mountain Salamander Scamper is a 25K trail race held in Pinnacle, North Carolina, with a start/finish area at 301 Boyd Nelson Rd. The course begins at the Pilot Creek Trailhead, follows Pilot Creek Trail to the campground, then proceeds via Grindstone and Ledge Springs trails up to the top of the mountain. Runners circle the Pinnacle counterclockwise on Jomeokee Trail, return through the upper parking area, descend on Grindstone, explore the backside on Mountain Trail, and finish by returning on Pilot Creek Trail.
Three full aid stations are located at approximately 3 miles, 7 miles, and 13 miles and provide water, Gatorade, Coke, gels, and fruit. The registration fee includes a long sleeve technical shirt (size guaranteed for registrations by January 5), a hot post-race meal, and a large laser-engraved finisher medallion. The field is limited to 125 runners and there is a cut-off time of 2:30 pm.
Dry camping is available at Jomeokee Campground, about a six minute drive from the race start. Packet pick-up is scheduled Friday, February 20 from 4:00 to 5:30 pm outside the Pilot Mountain State Park Visitor Center and on race day from 8:15 am to 9:15 am. The event proceeds rain or shine unless the state park is closed for weather, in which case organizers will seek to reschedule. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
