Sundance to Spearfish Marathon
The Sundance to Spearfish Marathon is scheduled for Sunday, September 13, 2026, with the course beginning near Cement Ridge, Wyoming, and finishing in Spearfish. The route is almost entirely downhill except for a single uphill section between mile 2.00 and mile 2.56 that gains 169 feet.
The opening 12 miles, from Cement Ridge to Savoy, run on improved gravel roads that pass mountain meadows, valleys, and canyons, and have a net descent of 1,606 feet. A noted waypoint on that segment is the winter film site for "Dances with Wolves" at mile 9.35. The remaining 14 miles are on hardtop and descend Spearfish Canyon Highway (Route 14A), a National Scenic Byway, dropping an additional 1,364 feet. This portion of the route is shared by the Leading Ladies Marathon.
The course is USATF certified and designated as a Boston qualifying course. The finish can be scored for either Wyoming or South Dakota, at the entrant's choice. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
